Lebenslauf
Eugen Freund, geboren am 15. April 1951 in Wien, aufgewachsen in Kärnten, ist seit 1972 im Journalismus tätig.
Nach Tätigkeiten beim „profil“ und in der Hörfunk-Innenpolitik wechselte er 1978 ins Außenministerium, wo er als Pressesekretär des Ministers und danach fünf Jahre beim Österreichischen Presse- und Informationsdienst in New York tätig war. Nach seiner Rückkehr aus den USA lehrte er an den Publizistik-Instituten in Wien und Salzburg, 1986 kam Freund wieder zum ORF: erst als Moderator der ZIB 2, dann im Bereich der Innen- und Außenpolitik. Als Korrespondent und Moderator des „Auslandsreports“ berichtete er über den Fall der Berliner Mauer ebenso wie über die Ölkatastrophe in Alaska. Zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen von ihm erschienen im „profil“, in der „ZEIT“, der Schweizer „WELTWOCHE“ sowie im „Standard“.
Von 1995 bis 2001 war er ORF-Korrespondent in Washington, er leitete das Büro seit 1997.
Im Spätherbst 2001 veröffentlichte er sein erstes Buch „Mein Amerika“, ein Rückblick auf Ereignisse und seine Tätigkeit in den USA. Danach kamen „Präsident Obama – der lange Weg ins Weiße Haus“ (Verlag Wieser), „Brennpunkte der Weltpolitik“ (2010, Verlag Kremayer und Scheriau) und „Zeit in Bildern“ (2011, Verlag Kremayr und Scheriau) auf den Markt. 2019 erschien im gleichen Verlag „Haben schon alle abgestimmt?“ – Notizen aus dem EU-Parlament. 2021 veröffentlichte Eugen Freund eine Art Autobiografie „Bleib schön sitzen – warum mich Hundertwasser malte und andere Erinnerungen an die ersten 70 Jahre“ (Wieser Verlag). Im Oktober 2022 brachte er das Buch „Zeitgeschichte(n) aus 50 Jahren“ heraus. (Wieser Verlag)
Von Mai 2011 bis Ende Dezember 2013 war Eugen Freund regelmäßig als Moderator der Nachrichtensendung „Zeit im Bild“ im ORF tätig.
Am 1. Oktober 2013 erschien sein erster Roman, „Der Tod des Landeshauptmanns“ (Verlag Kremayr und Scheriau). Am 31. 12. 2013 beendete Eugen Freund seine Tätigkeit beim ORF.
Am 16. Jänner 2014 wurde Eugen Freund offiziell Spitzenkandidat der SPÖ für die EU-Wahl 2014.
Am 1. Juli 2014 wurde Eugen Freund Mitglied des Europäischen Parlaments und als Teil der SPÖ-EU-Delegation Mitglied der Fraktion der Sozialdemokraten im Europäischen Parlament (S&D-Fraktion).
Eugen Freund wurde Mitglied im Ausschuss für Auswärtige Angelegenheiten (AFET), im Unterausschuss für Sicherheit und Verteidigung (SEDE) und in der Delegation für die Beziehungen zu den Vereinigten Staaten. Des Weiteren war Eugen Freund stellvertretendes Mitglied im Ausschuss für Industrie, Forschung und Energie (ITRE) und in der Delegation für die Beziehungen zu Palästina.
Aufgrund von Eugen Freunds langjähriger Erfahrung als Journalist, als Washington-Korrespondent des ORF und Moderator des Nachrichtenformates Zeit im Bild (ZIB) lag der Schwerpunkt seiner parlamentarischen Tätigkeit als Abgeordneter des Europäischen Parlaments besonders auf der Außenpolitik der Europäischen Union.
Eugen Freund war ständiger S&D-Schattenberichterstatter für die Beziehungen zu Palästina und wirkte als S&D-Schattenberichterstatter an den Berichten des EP hinsichtlich der strategischen Kommunikation der EU und der möglichen Beeinflussung durch Dritte mit.
Als Berichterstatter war Eugen Freund zuständig für die Ausarbeitung des Berichts über die Empfehlung des Europäischen Parlaments an den Rat zur 73. Tagung der Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen.
2019 trat Eugen Freund in den sogenannten Ruhestand, den er hauptsächlich zum Schreiben von Büchern und Zeitungskommentaren nützte. Im September/Oktober 2022 brachte er gemeinsam mit dem Stadttheater Klagenfurt eine Aufführung über den Ortstafelkonflikt 1972 auf die Bühne.
Curriculum Vitae
Eugen Freund was a familiar face on Austrian TV for 25 years. After serving as a press officer at the Austrian Mission to the United Nations in New York (1979-1984) he returned to Vienna to become an anchorman for the late-night evening news of Austrian TV (ORF).
He was later reassigned to cover the controversial presidential campaign of Kurt Waldheim and, in 1988, Mr. Freund joined the team of the “Auslandsreport”, a TV-magazine of foreign affairs. In this capacity he reported on the Bush/Gorbachev summit in Malta, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska, the first Gulf war and on many other international events.
In 1995, Mr. Freund moved to Washington, D.C., to begin his assignment as US-correspondent for ORF. He became bureau chief in 1998, a position which he held until the summer of 2001.
While in the US, he covered every aspect of the political, economic and cultural life. The most memorable of which were the bombing of the Alfred P. Murray Federal Building in Oklahoma, Bill Clinton’s second run for the White House, the Lewinsky affair, the Bush/Gore election campaign, the inauguration of George W. Bush and countless other events.
Only three weeks after his return from the United States, Mr. Freund was on the air, as a co-anchor in the studio, when terrorists struck the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. In the years thereafter he mainly served as Special Correspondent and as political analyst of international affairs. He interviewed Bill Clinton, Madeleine Albright, British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, and Yasser Arafat, among many others.
Mr. Freund also served as a long-time contributor to the CNN “World Report” and, more recently, as a freelance correspondent for NPR. He has contributed op-eds to the “Washington Post”, articles by him also appeared in the German weekly “DIE ZEIT” the Swiss “WELTWOCHE” and in many other publications. His book “Mein Amerika” (My America) made it to the Austrian bestseller list. Later on he published „Obama – der lange Weg ins Weiße Haus” (Obama – the Long Path to the White House) “Brennpunkte der Weltpolitik” (Flashpoints of World Politics) and a book with photos he took within the last 40 years: “Zeit in Bildern” (Breshnev- Carter meeting in Vienna 1979, Fall of the Berlin Wall 1989, Bill Clinton, impressions of New York and many others…) His first novel “Der Tod des Landeshauptmanns” (“The Death of the Governor”), a 2013 thriller based on the car crash of the controversial governor of Carinthia, Joerg Haider, remained on the bestseller list for many months. From May 2011 until the end of December 2013, Eugen Freund was anchoring the Evening News (“Zeit im Bild“) at the Austrian Broadcasting Company (ORF). He was also host of the international weekly magazine “Weltjournal“ (Wednesdays, 10.30 p.m.). His employment by ORF ended on Dec., 31. 2013.
Beginning of 2014 he decided to get actively involved in politics. After almost 40 years of journalism, he wanted to change the perspective – from commenting on issues into changing things. The upcoming elections of the European Parliament present a real chance for a Social Democratic majority and the possibility for change towards a more democratic, more transparent and more social Europe. Because Freund believes in this chance, he was running as SPÖ top candidate for the European elections in May 2014.
Eugen Freund became a member of the European Parliament on July 1st, 2014.
The focus of his parliamentary activity as a Member of the European Parliament was particularly on foreign policy of the European Union. Due to the geopolitical challenges of recent years, Freund was anxious to enforce a strong and common European foreign policy.
In the eighth legislature of the EP (2014-2019), Eugen Freund became a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) and the Delegation for Relations with the United States. He was also a substitute member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and the Delegation for relations with Palestine.
Eugen Freund was a permanent S&D shadow rapporteur for the relations with Palestine and for EU strategic communication. He was as rapporteur responsible for the Recommendation of the European Parliament to the Council on the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly.
He retired in 2019 and has since then published three more books: “Haben schon alle abgestimmt?“ on his tenure in the European Parliament, a kind of autobiography “Bleib schön sitzen – warum mich Hundertwasser malte und andere Erinnerungen an die ersten 70 Jahre” (Wieser Verlag). In October 2022 a new book was published “Zeitgeschichte(n) aus 50 Jahren” (Wieser Verlag), with two large chapters in English.
